Her Royal Highness's Yearly Yuletide Service of Carols Spotlights Charity Helpers
The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The sizable congregation will listen to a blend of carols, music and readings from actors such as award-winning actors.
Centred Around Kindness and Compassion
The theme of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a message before the carol service.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Music and Opportunity
Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to budding artists aided by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the charity, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at tonight's service.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.
Generations Gathering
Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."
This annual carol service will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
